Apple iPhone pushing AT&T smartphone payoff

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) activated 7.6 million iPhones in the latest quarter, accounting for one out of every five sold around the world and driving AT&T's smartphone business, The Washington Post reports. The iPhone has accounted for about 80 percent of the smartphones AT&T activated in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from 70 percent. AT&T did, however, see a nearly 80 percent drop in profit in 2011 following a pre-tax charge of about $4 billion for its failed acquisition of T-Mobile USA and other charges…
